Shoreland Restoration Information

The following are some good Web links with lots of useful information on what we refer to as ‘shoreland restoration’ or sometimes ‘shoreland buffer restoration.’ These should be helpful for those who want to know how to do vegetative shoreland buffer restoration (either because they’re required to under the zoning ordinance or because they just want to do it voluntarily).

Those four Web resources (above) provide a lot of background information on why shoreland vegetation is important for water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, etc. and they also provide some more how-to type information for landowners who want to do restoration on their property. There are a few publications that really focus on the more hands-on, how-to type information. Some of them are free from DNR or UW-Extension, and others are available for purchase from DNR, UW-Extension, Minnesota’s DNR, etc. Those resources are as follows:

It provides a description of each site’s design, the types of native plants used, and lessons learned. Examples are provided for wet, dry, sunny, shady, and sandy-soil conditions in Northern Wisconsin. ($20 each from MN DNR or from WAL) Lakescaping for Wildlife and Water Quality, book by Carrol Henderson, et al. (Minnesota DNR). It is a colorful, comprehensive book that describes lake ecology and the importance of natural shorelines. It also explains how to restore natural shorelines for erosion control and wildlife habitat using native plants (includes native plant lists).
